Over 6 tonnes of electrical appliances given a second life
Success for the pilot project in Geneva, Zurich and Bern
For about 4 months, people in Geneva, Bern and Zurich were able to give their old electrical appliances a second life - right on their doorstep. The Electro Bag made it easy to collect electrical appliances and then deposit them at the letterbox. The rest was done by SENS eRecycling in a project partnership with Swiss Post. And this offer was very well received: over 4500 orders were received. A SENSational 6 tonnes of electrical appliances were collected and returned to the cycle. Thanks to a new offer in collaboration with the Service Industrielle de Genève SIG, a ReUse offer was also created for the first time.
In the canton of Geneva and the two cities of Zurich and Bern, collection fever truly broke out. Cellars were cleared out, boxes emptied and drawers turned upside down. The result: over 6.5 tonnes of defective or no longer used electrical appliances were returned with the Electro Bags – a sensational achievement and a great success for the new service offered by SENS eRecycling in project partnership with Swiss Post! Not only do the good figures bear this out, but also the many positive responses from the public.
In order to gain a deeper insight into the recycling behaviour of the Swiss, the filled recycling sacks were analysed. A lot of exciting things came to light. For example, the average filled Electro Bag weighs just over 4.5 kilograms and typically contains electric toothbrushes, shavers, irons and blenders. But remote controls, mobile phones and headphones were also disposed of with the Electro Recycling Bag. Particularly pleasing: at less than 0.5%, the proportion of foreign matter in the bags is very low.
The new ReUse offer was also actively used. About one third of the material was handed in for reuse. In the end, only a small part of this – a little over 500 kilograms – could be effectively reused. However, it is clear that there is a need for such services in Switzerland. We are staying tuned and will therefore continue to develop the offer!
Do you still have an Electro Bag at home?
Please return it by 15 August 2022 – even if it is not yet completely full. Thank you very much!
