Making eRecycling a success

When it is no longer worthwhile to repair broken washing machines, refrigerators, vacuum cleaners, espresso machines, lamps or solar panels, they should be recycled. To ensure this is done in a professional and environmentally friendly manner, they must first be disposed of correctly – which is something we must all do.

It’s good to collect

You play a vital role at the beginning of the recycling process. Faulty electrical equipment – no matter how small – must not be thrown out with household waste but instead deposited at the designated return points.

There are two ways to do this in Switzerland. You can hand over your disused electrical and electronic equipment at specialist or retail shops – in other words, at all shops that sell products of the same type. Or you can take your electronic waste to one of over 440 collection points affiliated with the SENS recycling system.

Disposal without additional costs

Whether you return your equipment to a shop or a collection point, you will not be charged extra for its disposal. That’s because you’ve already paid for it through the advance recycling contribution included in the purchase price of almost all electrical equipment sold in Switzerland.

Potentially record-breaking collection levels

Electronic waste is collected at official return points, where it is also sorted and packaged. It is then transported to specialist disassembly and recycling companies.

The quantities involved are impressive. Since SENS eRecycling was founded in 1990, no less than 1.3 million tonnes of electrical equipment has been collected and delivered to recycling companies in Switzerland. Hardly any other country collects more electronic waste per capita.

Sens eRecycling

75%

of an item of electrical equipment can be reused on average thanks to recycling. This includes, for example, plastics, metals and glass.

SENS collection points are available throughout Switzerland, where electrical equipment can be returned free of charge.

recycling companies process the electrical equipment from SENS eRecycling – all of them in Switzerland. Only photovoltaic modules are processed in nearby countries.

Sens eRecycling

11.14

of electrical equipment was collected per capita in 2024 through the recycling system of SENS eRecycling. This puts us in a leading position worldwide.

Over 1.4 million tonnes

of electrical equipment has been collected and processed since the foundation of SENS eRecycling in 1990.

Separating the valuable from the harmful

Electronic waste contains a wide range of components. Many of these are valuable and can be reused. Others, however, are harmful. This problem is the first task tackled by recycling companies.

They start by disassembling components and materials containing hazardous substances, often using manual processes. These tasks are generally carried out at sites called disassembly facilities.

Maximum quality through modern technology

However, not all hazardous substances are removed by hand. There are also those that are removed mechanically. In the case of refrigerators, for example, special systems working with negative pressure are used to extract any CFCs that may be contained in the refrigerant. Once all the pollutants have been separated properly, they are disposed of in accordance with the highest quality standards, ensuring no harm comes to people or the environment.

Keeping valuable resources in circulation

Ultimately, the aim is to recover valuable raw materials that can be reused and close the material cycle in the best possible way.

The proportion of recyclable materials in electronic waste is high, at around 75% on average. This mainly involves metals such as iron, steel, copper and aluminium, various plastics and glass, but also precious metals such as silver and gold.

Sens eRecycling

853,000 tonnes

of iron and steel has been brought back into circulation thanks to recycling since 1990.

Sens eRecycling

55,000 tonnes

of copper has been recycled since 1990, equivalent to a cable that would stretch around the world 28 times.

Sens eRecycling

47,000 tonnes

of aluminium has been fed back into the production of new products since 1990 thanks to eRecycling.

Sens eRecycling

102,000 tonnes

of plastics has been recycled since 1990 and processed for use in new products.

Sens eRecycling

18,000 tonnes

of glass has been recovered since 1990.

Sens eRecycling

9,000 tonnes

of zinc has re-entered circulation.

Sens eRecycling

211 kilograms

of silver since 1990 – a considerable amount of this precious metal.

Sens eRecycling

213 kilograms

of gold has been recovered. That’s equivalent to around 27,000 wedding rings!

Innovative processes, effective protection

State-of-the-art separation technology is used to recover the various recyclable materials as efficiently as possible, along with innovative, high-capacity sorting and processing techniques.

This ensures that metals and plastics are returned to the material cycle in the purest possible form, ready to be reused as secondary raw materials in the manufacture of new goods. This closes the cycle, conserves resources and the provides effective environmental protection.
