Rattle, creak, roar!
How the end sounds before a fresh start.
Sometimes a sound says more than a thousand words. When the drill only creaks instead of drilling, the hairdryer roars instead of blowing, and the rattling of the blender loudly announces that it’s long past its best, you know it’s time to act.
eRecycling? Sounds good!
But how does it work? One thing is for sure: Discarded electrical appliances do not belong in household waste. This also applies to small and micro appliances. Because even if your electric toothbrush, your razor, or your fur baby’s flashing LED collar no longer works, there are still many valuable raw materials inside these items that can be put back into the cycle with proper recycling. Therefore, it is important that you return broken devices at the designated drop-off points. You can drop them off at specialist or retail shops at no additional cost – or you can bring them to one of the over 750 collection points that are connected to the SENS network.
Three reasons to join
Disposing of your old electrical or electronic appliances correctly is worthwhile for three reasons.
Dispose of hazardous substances
Firstly, you make sure any hazardous substances contained in the appliances are cleanly separated and disposed of safely in line with the highest quality standards. These hazardous substances include mercury, PCBs, refrigerants and heavy metals. Although substances that are harmful to health and the environment, such as PCBs or hydrofluorocarbons, have been banned for some time, they are still present in old appliances. There is a major environmental benefit to recycling them. It corresponds to the annual environmental impact of all inhabitants of a medium-sized city like Biel.Reuse recyclable materials
Reuse recyclable materials
Secondly, you help to save resources and recover valuable raw materials that can be reused – and, doing so, you help to close the material cycle in the best possible way. The proportion of recyclable materials in electronic waste is substantial – 75% on average. These are mainly metals such as iron, steel, copper and aluminium, various technical plastics and glass, but also precious metals such as silver and gold. Not least, critical raw materials, such as lithium, cobalt and nickel, can also be reintroduced into the cycle through proper eRecycling.
Feel good
Thirdly, you also reward yourself by properly disposing of old electronic devices. And not just because it feels good to do something good for the environment. You’ll be amazed at how good you feel when you finally get rid of old junk and make room for something new.
Our contribution to eRecycling
906,650 tonnes
of iron and steel has been brought back into circulation thanks to recycling since 1990.
58,600 tonnes
of copper has been recycled since 1990, equivalent to a cable that would stretch around the world 28 times.
50,400 tonnes
of aluminium has been fed back into the production of new products since 1990 thanks to eRecycling.
108,700 tonnes
of plastics has been recycled since 1990 and processed for use in new products.
19,200 tonnes
of glass has been recovered since 1990.
10,500 tonnes
of zinc has re-entered circulation.
1,6 tonnes
of silver since 1990 – a considerable amount of this precious metal.
387 kilograms
of gold has been recovered.
